Information about the town – Polska / podkarpackie

The first mention of Ustrzyki Dolne dates back to 1509. This is when it was incorporated as a village by kniaz (a nobility rank) Iwani Janczowicz Transilvanus, who brought settlers ex terris Ungarie, that is from Hungary. Successors of the village founder adopted, in time, the name Ustrzyccy. The village’s location close to trade routes leading from Lesser Poland (Małopolska) to Russia and Hungary helped the settlement’s development. Hungarian wine brought from Jaślisk and cattle pastured in Bieszczady were among trade objects of the time. In 1727 Ustrzyki was granted civic rights.

After 1872, when a railway line from Koszyce to Przemyśl, through Ustrzyki Dolne was put into operation, the town started to develop dynamically. In 1889 railway connections with Sanok, Krosno and Jasło were established from the town. In the 1880’s oil exploitation started in the area and an oil refinery was built in 1900.
