Organization of Former Zagłębie Inhabitants

Organization of Former Zagłębie Inhabitants includes ex-inhabitants and their descendants from: Sosnowiec, Będzin, Czeladź, Dąbrowa Górnicza, Zawiercie, Strzemieszyce, Sokołów and Modrzejów.

The purpose of the organization is to preserve the memory about the Jews coming from this territory. The compatriots' association was trying to commemorate the Jewish communities from Zagłębie in Israel. Today, thanks to the Jews from that territory and their descendants’ efforts, the memory about the communities from Zagłębie is preserved owing to the monument in Nachalat Icchak cemetery in Tel Aviv and the commemoration place in Modi'in. One of the streets in Tel Aviv was also named in honour of them. It is Rechov Kehilot Zaglembie Street (Zagłębie's Municipalities Street).
In the last years the compatriots' association has had good relations with the local government authorities from the Śląskie Province. Because of their help and many Polish volunteers’ engagement, they managed to renovate seven Jewish cemeteries, put monuments and commemorative plaques in places where previously synagogues, hospitals, orphanages and other Jewish institutions had been located. In addition, monuments to commemorate the ghetto heroes were put in Będzin and Sosnowiec.

The compatriots' association is very active. The organization publishes Alon Zalembia/Zaglembia Cajtung ("The Zagłębie's Bulletin") whose name refers to the newspaper published in the inter-war period.
Except for that, the association members have a website with news and photos of their region. They also organise lectures, workshops and meetings in museums.
In the association's seat, in Friszman Street in Tel Aviv, there is a club in which the Jews from Zagłębie can meet a few times a week.
The members also organise educational trips to Poland during which they visit places connected with their ancestors' history – Masa Szoraszim (The Roots Trip).

Currently, about 1500 families who live in Israel and many people from other countries belong to the organization. The majority of the active members belong to the first and second generation of the rescued Jews from the Holocaust, but also young people, grandchildren of the Jews from Zagłębie participate in the organization's activities.
