13.09.2010 - Birth Anniversary of Julian Tuwim
Julian Tuwim wrote that Łódź was like “Baghdad from a fairy tale” and “La Mancha from Manchester”. In spite of the fact that as a 22-year old man he went to Warsaw, Tuwim’s hometown appeared in his works many times. “I declare: Łódź is my city!”, he used to say. All generations of Poles grew up with his poems. That is why September 13 (Monday) was an important date for the residents of Łódź. On 116th birth anniversary of Tuwim, Manufaktura was transformed into a unique railway station. A locomotive was placed on the square, with several small carriages behind, which could be painted. The culmination of the celebration was breaking the record in simultaneous reading of Tuwim’s poem entitled “The Locomotive” by possibly the largest number of people.
The next event connected with Tuwim’s anniversary is taking place tomorrow. It is organized by the City of Łódź office under the auspices of Tomasz Sadzyński, the acting president of Łódź. The celebration is going to be held in several points: Pasaż Shillera/Schiller Walkway and ul. Piotrowska/Piotrowska Street (near the “Tuwim’s bench”, from Tuwima Street to Zamenhof Street). Addressed to students of primary, junior high and secondary schools, the festivity is taking place from 11 to 8 PM.
