FESTIVAL OF FOUR CULTURES 2010 - "Paul Celan. Poeta. Ocalony. Żyd” a literary meeting and the promotion of the book by John Felstiner.

The book by John Felstiner (published by Austeria) and its protagonist will be discussed by Celan’s literary output experts. Celan, the son of Romanian Jews was born in 1920 in Bukowiniew. He survived the Holocaust which influenced his life and poetry to the biggest extent. In 1970 he committed suicide. His real name was Paul Antschel, with his surname modified to Anczel, which resulted in the anagram Celan.

His literary output stems from many sources. Initially, he based on the achievements of German expressionism and French surrealism, however, what turned out to be the key factors in shaping his career were his war experiences. The poet confessed once that his poems were “born out of despair.” In them the readers can find traces of Hassidic traditions, the Bible, as well as such poets as Hölderlin, Rilke or Trakl.

The chief guest of the meeting will be Ryszard Krynicki, a prominent poet and translator of Celan’s works, and the whole event will be hosted by Zdzisław Jaskuła, a person associated with Łódź, a poet, a German language translator and a theatrical producer.
