Today, Kołobrzeg is the seat of the authorities of the Kołobrzeg-Karlino rural County in Western Pomerania Province[1.1]. The city is situated on the Białogard Plain (Równina Białogardzka) at the mouth of the Parsęta River at the point where it flows into the Baltic Sea[1.2]. It is a significant transportation center and a sea border crossing point. The Polish Baltic Shipping Company (Polska Żegluga Bałtycka), a passenger, fishing and yacht ports have been established in the river’s mouth[1.3].
The city has belonged to Poland since 1945 and became the capital of the Kołobrzeg County in 1999. Kołobrzeg was excluded from the County of Kołobrzeg and Karlino, constituting an independent city with county rights, in 1920. The County of Kołobrzeg and Karlino was established in 1872, replacing the "Duchy” County (Kreis Fürstentum) which had been part of the Koszalin Regency District (Regierungsbezirk) since 1815. Kołobrzeg is one of the oldest cities in Western Pomerania. In the middle of 2007 the population of Kołobrzeg numbered 44,737 inhabitants.
