The village of Czyżew was mentioned in the 12-13th c. The area was invaded many times by Lithuanian, Prussian and Jatvingian troops.
In 1476, Czyżew was granted a municipal charter. In 1795, it became part of the Prussian annexed territory. In 1807, it was incorporated in the Duchy of Warsaw. In 1815, it was included in the Congress Kingdom of Poland. In 1870, the Tsarist authorities deprived Czyżew of its municipal charter.
During World War II, in September 1939, Czyżew was taken over by the Soviet forces. In June 1941, the German army invaded and captured the town.
