Cemetery

Heritage Sites – Cemeteries
Polska / podlaskie

The Jewish cemetery in Bielsk Podlaski (Brańska Street) was founded in 1807. It is located in the western part of the city, in front of the petrol station on the way to Brańsk. The last burial took place in 1941. During World War II Germans devastated the cemetery.

On the area of 1.5 hectares about 100 tombstones have survived, the oldest one dated 1850. The matzevot were made from marble, sandstone and concrete. Inscriptions in Hebrew, Yiddish and Polish have been preserved on the tombstones. The cemetery is partially enclosed.

On the mass graves, dating back to World War II, a monument was erected bearing the inscription: "The place of execution of Polish citizens of Jewish nationality, shot dead in 1941-1944 by the military police and the Gestapo of Nazi Germany. Over 200 people lie in the mass grave. May they rest in peace."
