Makabi
Jewish community before 1989 – Organizations and associations
Polska / małopolskie
The biggest were the “Makabi” Sports Association founded at the beginning of the 20th century. It was managed successively by Bernard Stamberger and Doctor Szymon Messinger. Sports playgrounds were built for the Association’s needs. There were numerous sections: tennis, skiing, swimming, football, gymnastics, basketball and table tennis. Contestants from different sections were successful during competitions. The first place in a table tennis tournament in the Wadowice region and qualification of the basketball team to the A-league of the Kraków region can be enumerated as the biggest successes. Another big achievement was Lola Rauchberger’s win in the run race in Zakopane in 1935.
The Sports Association built a shelter at Kocierz. It constituted a base thanks to which winter sports, and especially skiing, could develop in the town. One of the best skiers was Samuel Ringer.
